School Week 3

School officially ends for the week today because of PSLE Oral Examinations tomorrow and the day after. My mentor has been really nice, giving me work on a gradual basis and I very much like this arrangement for the time being. Today I had to share with them an idiom of the day and I was feeling very nervous for it. It turned out to be pretty well but I still prefer to plan my lessons beforehand. I think I will be teaching them more often in Term 4 and I have mixed feelings with regards to that. On one hand I am feeling super excited to make use of interesting resources to impart knowledge to them. Speaking of interesting resources, I had my first Professional Development (PD) session today and learnt so many techniques that I can use for my lessons in the future! However, I am unsure and afraid of how receptive the students would be to my teaching methods. It will be essential to mix and match techniques and resources to complement their learning needs. This will require some years of experience and of course, multiple trials and errors :S.

You know it is often known that children have such short attention span (max 10 minutes). Last week, I witnessed this very cute boy sweeping the floor for close to 45 minutes. I was a relief teacher for the class and saw him sweeping and sweeping. At the end of the day, the floor looked rather dirty even after 45 minutes of sweeping, hahahah! It is a wonder how he had managed to fixate his attention on sweeping for such a long period of time. Perhaps it's not that their attention span is limited, the activities and interests of a child matter more? I relieved another class today and they were given some math sums to complete by their absent teacher. The instructions were so unclear and I took quite a while to figure out what the question wanted them to do :/. It's no wonder the students were having huge difficulty in trying to complete that particular assignment -__-. Luckily, I managed to understand the question and taught them towards the end of the class hahaha! I hope my understanding was correct though :/.

To end off, all the best to the P6 students who will be taking their first PSLE 'paper' tomorrow!! ^^
